What do the 19th century opera La Bohème, Greek mythology and Elton John have in common? They all inspired Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 classic Moulin Rouge.
Moulin Rouge brings the story of two star-crossed lovers living in Montmartre, Paris to life with an overabundance of colors, flashy costumes, and Lurhmann’s signature ‘chaotic’ visuals. Oh, and did we mention it’s a jukebox musical? The movie follows Christian (Ewan McGregor), a penniless and naïve poet, who has his entire life flipped upside down when he falls head over heels for the beautiful Satine (Nicole Kidman), a courtesan and star performer at the cabaret theatre, the Moulin Rouge. The two lovers are thrown into a fantastical whirlwind romance, but quickly have to face reality, and potentially tragedy, as Satine gets involved with the Duke, a jealous nobleman who’s as equally rich as he is dangerous.
