NB: Due to persisting technical difficulties with the main projector, these films will be screened on a smaller Epson projector which will be in the theater. We believe it will be a vibe. The screening will take place in the usual local. The screening will be free for NFK members, membership can be bought online or at the door.
In this double feature we will present the classic film Dragon Inn as well as a movie made nearly 40 years later that takes place during a screening of that classic film.
Directed by King Hu, Dragon Inn is considered by a critic from Sight & Sound to be “one of the most important wuxia pian films to emerge from the Chinese-speaking world prior to the great martial arts boom of the turn of the 1970s” although it was greatly overlooked on its initial release. It takes place in 1457 China and follows a group of brave swordsmen caught up in a battle in the midst of political intrigue and it is up to them to turn the tides at the battle of Dragon Inn.
Goodbye Dragon Inn, on the other hand, takes place on a much smaller scale, at a historic Chinese cinema during their last day before they shut down. Dragon Inn is the last film that they show and we watch as they say goodbye to the cinema with this final screening.
