Ran – 35mm

In his last epic film Kurosawa returned to Shakespeare for the third time with an adaptation of King Lear. The film was at the time the most expensive Japanese production ever and took almost a decade of planning. Kurosawa spent much of this time hand-painting every planned shot, resulting in the extraordinary beautiful color photography of both the natural beauty  and the chaos of war.
