“What’s your favourite scary movie?”

Horror, as a genre, has always been heavily reliant on tropes and cliches. In no subcategory is this more apparent than in so-called Slasher movies. From Friday the 13th, to the House on Sorority Row, or even in Wes Craven’s own a Nightmare On Elm Street, we see body upon body of many a helpless, sex-crazed young adult being viciously sliced up by some evil, ghoulish fiend. There’s blood. There’s a final girl. And, if we’re lucky, there might even be some partial nudity thrown in the mix!

Now, take this formula, and combine it with a zeitgeist well aware of it – how can you still make a slasher film that’s exciting, innovative and most importantly terrifying?

This is precisely what Craven achieved with his now-classic 1996 hit Scream. From a script penned by Kevin Williamson, not only did Scream prove a critical and box-office hit, it also breathed new life in a long dormant genre.
