"Do you think I look like I'm from Sacramento?"
In Lady Bird, we follow Christine McPherson, a senior year student at a Catholic High School in Sacramento, California, in 2002. We meet her at the cusp of adulthood, desperate to remove herself from who she was, in order to be who she’s supposed to be. She insists on being called Lady Bird, and spares no chance to proclaim how she “can’t wait” to get out of Sacramento. Lady Bird is eager to go out into the “real world”, convinced –as young adults often are– that she sees everything oh-so-much more clearly than the boring, normal people around her. This attitude leads to tensions between her and her mom, who’s very way of being seems to rub Lady Bird the wrong way at every turn.
Through two outstanding performances by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, Gerwig masterfully depicts the transition into adulthood in a humorous, beautiful and –perhaps most importantly– an earnest film.
