The stalker is a filmic archetype with roots going back to the silent era; looming, dark shadows lurking through impressionistic alleys, lit dramatically, revealing as little as possible, obscuring most of the stalker. He is the fears and paranoia of those he stalkes, a persistent bad dream waking you at night, drenched in sweat. He is the very personification of obsession and persistance – he is Jim Carrey.
This black comedy marked a slight departure for Carrey, who at that point was mostly know for his zany –relatively kid friendly– turns in Dumb & Dumber, The Mask and Ace Venture. Carrey plays an obsessive stalker, forcing his way into the life of Matthew Broderick's Steven by way of his job as a cable installer, desperate to become Stevens friend. Carreys signature zanyness here takes on a dark, uneasy tone, which complements the very specific tone of this motion picture expertly.
