“There will be no order, only chaos”
In Darren Aronofsky’s feature directorial debut we meet the mathematical genius, Maximilian Cohen. A man who believes that everything can be understood in terms of numbers, and if you graph the numbers properly patterns will emerge everywhere in nature. Struggling with migraines since he was a kid, and having difficulty forming social connections with others than his former professor Sol Robeson, Max tries to predict the behavior of the Stock Market. Gaining attention from Wall Street, with an obvious interest in his studies, and a Hasidic Torah scholar who believes that his numbers are a code sent from God.
Aronofsky has received overwhelming acclaim for his later films and it’s in his first film we see the exploration of the themes religion and mysticism, themes that would form his later works as a filmmaker. The film is shot in black and white with sharp contrast and well-crafted images that are not easily forgotten.
