Yume – 35mm
Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers. The worlds of dreams are unlike anything we can experience in waking life. In dreams there are no limits to what can happen; no set flow in time, no rules, and no expectations. However, there can still be patterns, in our dreams. Perhaps we revisit certain locations, or meet people lost from our past. Real happenings may happen again – only now different, not a remembering of what happenes, but something new, and unique to the world of dreams. Dreaming offers us a wholly unique, individual experience, to cherish and reflect on.
Akira Kurosawa is widely –and deservedly– considered to be one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers to ever live. His films span everything from samurai films, yakuza crime thrillers, to intimate dramas and shakesperean epics. Even after such an illustrious career, his most impressive work came in 1990, with his turn to magical realism and anthology filmmaking with YUME (Dreams). This picture is an absolute treasure, and I implore anyone who has the chance to come see it in a beautiful format
