New Order is a French-Mexican dystopian thriller directed, written, produced and edited by Michael Franco. The story is set in the future, in Mexico, and focused on the rising conflict between the elite and the underclass. Although it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, it has received a lot of criticism worldwide for its shallow portrayal of the characters and depending on racial stereotypes. Moreover, it was met with backlash in Mexico where the director was accused of racism and classism. The film is described as a violent, provocative and intense depiction of a class division and its possible horrifying consequences.
