Cinema Neuf: Dr. Strangelove (1964)
“You can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!”
Crafted just two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the near-end of the world, Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was a timely Cold War satire
about the end of the world. Kubrick brings together a host of talented comedians – including Peter Sellers in three separate roles – to explore the implications of mutually assured destruction via thermonuclear war.
Kicked off by an almost-rogue general who decides that the time has come for the United States to bomb Russia, the film follows the tense and comedic decision-making of those leading the US and the USSR scramble to respond. Some of the fears reflected in Dr. Strangelove, such as concerns over fluoridation of drinking water, were left in the era, yet the film still entertains and resonates today.
