What exactly do you do when everyone in the world insists that you are the messiah? This is the conundrum that the titular Brian has to deal with. Born on the same day as Jesus of Nazareth, Brian lives under the rule of the Roman Empire. When his small acts of rebellion are noticed by the citizens of Nazareth, the people start to view him as a savior figure, despite him not fully living up to that role.
Written with a trademark dry, satirical tone, this Monty Python production is a sly critique of religion as a whole, and the general groupthink it encourages.
At the time of its release, Life of Brian was banned in Norway, due to its supposedly blasphemous content. The film was subsequently marketed in Sweden as the film that was “so funny that it was banned in Norway.”
